Cafe Otto, Glebe

Yet again, I found some old photos from last year lying around so I had to give them so love and blog about them.

One cafe we visited last year was Cafe Otto. We wanted to have lunch at a cafe but we had all our ideas exhausted. Lucky (or maybe not..), we bumped into Cafe Otto and had lunch in their outdoor courtyard.

K ordered a strawberry thickshake (Regular size $9) because he needs to find the best milk/thick shake he can find and I had chamomile tea ($3.70) in the hope to soothe my inner soul (nah, just kidding). My take on the chamomile tea - Meh. I'm a fan of chamomile tea but this one was just so bland. The tea was so light, or diluted, that wasn't much taste. I gave up drinking after two cups, which is probably half of the capacity of the pot.

A surprise that came with the tea - a butter cookie!

For mains, we had the french brioche toast with banana, strawberries and maple syrup ($15) and big breakfast which had poached eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, tomato, mushrooms, baked beans and toast ($19). Somehow, I would always order french toasts while K always orders the big breakfast (refer to the post here). I guess we would always pick the safest choice, if not the most adventurous.

The french toasts were very... egg-ful, there seem to be more egg than bread which is not quite the right balance. The toasts were bland, but there was a generous serving of banana and strawberries. I didn't quite like it though, so the search for the best french toasts continues..

The big breakfast portion was huge. The eggs were reasonably poached, but everything else were average. A major plus was the hash, which wasn't too oily or bland.

Our visit to Cafe Otto wasn't quite a memorable one. The wait was long and the service was less than efficient (not that they were slow). We probably would visit some other cafe if we were to be in the area of Glebe.

Sonoma Bakery, Glebe

After heard of how yummy their bread is, I arranged to catch up with my friend at Sonoma Bakery! The café isn't too far away from the main road, a short walk along Glebe Point Road found us with a satisfying lunch and an enjoyable catch up!

Pumpkin Quiche. I'm guessing it is because I can't quite remember since it was too long ago.

Chinese pulled pork sandwich. This was absolutely yummy! The mayo was exceptionally sweet and together with their homemade bread, this is perfect. I will definitely be coming back for more pulled pork sandwich.

Latte. My latte came after the sandwich and it was slightly disappointing. Perhaps there were too many people and orders, they even missed out on my latte order.

Hazelnut tart. My friend bought this tart home and we all had a little bit of it just to try. If I remember it right, this had a slight rum taste in this?

Not the best review of Sonoma Bakery, which means I need to visit them again, soon!

Revisited: Clipper Café, Glebe

Read here for previous visit.

It's been a while at Clipper Café and a wonder how rare a visit to Clipper's is when it is so close to uni. When we arrived, there were plenty of people, mostly students with computers and huge stacks of notes and books to accompany them. Definitely a favourite among students.

Skimmed cappuccino with beautiful art.

For a change, I had a refreshing fruit juice - Kiwi and Pear. The combination tasted a little weird on first try, but subsequently it was much easier to gulp down.

Warm banana bread with ricotta spread and berries. This time round, I had my own warm banana bread because I'm in love with these stuff. Because I'm not quite a cheese person, so the ricotta was slightly overwhelming. The berries were slightly too sour for my liking, but it sorta balances with the sweetness in the bread. I enjoyed my banana bread very much.

Generous servings of berries.

Poached eggs with salmon and capers. The eggs were well done, perfect with the smoked salmon and toast. However, the capers didn't felt too right and the entire ensemble was a little too dry - would be better with an accompanying sauce.

Badde Manors Cafe, Glebe

Being in a uni that is close to all good cafes around makes it very sinful. We wanted to pop by Sam I Am for brunch, but unfortunately they were closed (not too sure if it wasn't opening hours yet or they were closed for business though :(). We strolled around the area for a bit, up and down Glebe Point Road, then finally settled with the busy looking Badde Manors Cafe just around the corner. I reckon it was a good decision made :)

Tried their coffee, was pretty good. I'm not a pro at coffees, so as long as they aren't too difficult to drink down, I would think they are good coffee.

This is Badde Manors Big Breakfast, which was yum. I like how it's got an array of different stuff put together  and very affordable! Only at A$13.50, I really cannot complain about much. You can tell, there are eggs (done to your choice) with spinach, mushroom, baked beans, seasoned potatoes and grilled tomato served on sourdough bread. A wholesome meal for a small budget.

The other we had was french toast with strawberries and maple syrup. A delight to look at and really affordable too at A$10.50. It looks like a small portion, but it was as filling as it can be.

Had a good time savouring what we ordered. Do give Badde Manors a try if you haven't been there, it will be satisfying :)

Sam I Am

The last Monday morning was stressful and sad for me, It was that same Monday which I blogged about I Chi Ban Teppan-Yaki. Sleeping late, then waking up early just to catch a bus to uni, go for exam that I got stumped on the first question because I didn't read that chapter at all. Then had two missed calls, just to realised it was a long distance from London! That kinda made my morning, even though it was kinda embarrassing that my phone started buzzing away during the paper.

I really like how Ag faculty is pretty slack and how workload isn't as bad as the other faculties, even though it's not very much appreciated. Well, my course in uni is often associated with farmers and farming so that's probably the only thing I'm a little disheartened to explain about. Nevertheless, I enjoy the flexibility of my course and summer holidays would be the best time to decide on my other electives to take. I'm getting sick and tired of finance, should I drop it?

Anyway, I skipped my arvo lessons on Monday to start planning up my industry farm placement. Because some friend of mine was so super hungry, we popped by Sam I Am for his lunch and I grabbed a cuppa mocha. I reckon I still like Starbucks or Gloria Jeans compared to hot bitter cuppa. Since 1) I didn't think that I was gonna take photos and 2) I left home really early that morning, I only managed to take some photos of my phone. The photo qualities are really bad, but I still love my phone.

The guy at the counter gave us our "queue number" and it came in the form of this dino! I actually told the guy at the counter, how cute. That must have sounded really bimbo >.<

Right behind the counter was this blackboard that wrote "Jasmine + Sam" or something to that extent. I didn't manage to capture a picture, but how sweet. I was meant to take photos of the interior, but argh the moodiness I had because I didn't bring my camera just spoilt it. It was a very comfy place to be, over coffee or just breakfast. They had three levels and WK said the seats at the courtyard were the best, pity it rained.

So, this is my mocha >.<

WK had some big meat brekkie, but I didn't try anyway. No camera, no mood. Sorry! It looks like a pretty small portion to me, haha I know I'm a big eater, but somehow he was trying very hard to finish it. Oh, I must add, the chef had some really good professionalism in him! He didn't think that the poached eggs were well done, so the waiter came up a second time to add another poached egg! Nice friendly staff they've got there!

I would need to go back to Sam I Am again, with my camera and my mood to try the food! WK said they had some crepes or pancake which are really good too, so I better remember that and bring a friend along heehee. Thanks to WK, I've been trying a lot of nice restaurants, cafes around uni. He ought to remember that he has to bring me to some really good cafe near Central.

And WK was really really nice to remember to get me something from Tassie. Okay, maybe he randomly just got one bottle from the many he bought. I haven't tried it yet though, but I would once I finish up my Manuka honey that I bought to rid my sore throat and cough. I wonder what I can use this bottle of Tassie honey for.

Photos taken at Sam I Am were taken with my phone, Sony Ericsson Aino. Pardon the quality!

Clipper Café

It was a pretty tough week, having to deal with deadlines that weren't mine (I had to help a couple of friends with their assignments T__T), and a really bad fall in my room. I didn't think the fall was that serious, but the pain seem to be increasing by day. I don't know if it was fall then amnesia or amnesia then fall, but I can't remember how I fell and whether I fell forward or backward. But I've got a really bad backache now and my knee is slightly bruised. A series of unfortunate events.

Anyway yesterday, after just an hour of lecture, a really nice friend brought me to Clipper Café. He was raving about their good coffees and brekkie, and it was so close to uni. So we walked over really slowly, because of my backache >.<

It was a very cosy café but it was a bad timing to be there. There were some construction going on just right in front of the café, it was soooo loud that it was really unpleasant. But anyhow, I like the decor of the café, so vintage and victorian. Super like :)

Didn't managed to capture pictures of the skim cappuccino that WK ordered, but I suppose it's good since he always has it there. But I've got all the pictures of the food, if that's more important :P

So I ordered poached eggs with smoked salmon tasmanian on impulse because they didn't have the soup that I wanted :( Hope I got the name right, I think this was also organic! It was written on the board hanging above right before the counter, don't think anyone will miss it. I think it was on the menu too, but I skipped through the menu since everything seem have to be eggs or salad which I don't fancy. Ironically, I ordered eggs for lunch anyway.

But this was really good! I liked it with the tomato base and it wasn't like raw salmon which was good. When I ordered it I was like, damn is it gonna be raw salmon. Thankfully it's not and I should be trustworthy because I'm not an egg lover and I liked it :) The only con was the bread though, it was a little tough but there was heaps of olive oil in it which I like. So con + pro = neutral towards the bread.

So WK had like some banana bread with berries. He had it several times already, so I guess it really has to be good. I was a little reluctant to try it though, because it was like.. banana +  bread and I only take banana as it is.

Then WK offered a small bit for me and I was still a little apprehensive. But nevertheless being spontaneous me, I had a go and omg I never knew warm banana bread was that good. I didn't like the berries though, but it was a good combination of cold berries + warm banana bread! I guess it's a must try, since WK is such a fan of them.

And WK is so amused by the grinders that they've got, he is super cheap thrill at this. But I guess in an ordinary asian household, you'll probably never find such grinders. I must remember to have them at my new place when I move at the end of this year!

Really thankful for the great lunch that lasted the rest of the day. The salmon I had was filling that I didn't have dinner, but of course I snacked heaps in the night. Thanks WK for bringing me! I think there's another coffee place which has awesome pancakes that he was supposed to bring me too. The service was pretty alright, considering it was a busy café. I guess I would go back there if anyone fancies a good lunch :)

Exams are in exactly a month, I should really get prepared. I've got an exam on monday and more deadlines coming up in a few weeks! Gah, sometimes uni just takes a toil on me and my friends are also complaining. We totally love holidays!

WK and I had a very interesting topic that we were discussing, I guess it's good to share it here too. I was just complaining to him about a certain friend and he said that with my opinions he'll start to form stereotypes on that person. So i disputed and said that stereotypes are what society regards of a certain issue or what an entire group of hundreds of people view the issue. Do you get what I mean? So, opinions vs stereotypes -- Does one's opinions form a stereotype of another person, or is it because of the stereotype that affects opinions? Such a play of words, I like :)

Side note: I changed my watermark a little, still can't decide which one is better or are the colours good. But even if all else changes, the credit will still be the same. Yay, I love my watermark because I spent so much time on them :/ I know I'm a noob at such stuff. Oh wells.
